Surviving a Hospital Stay After Back SurgeryWhile some back surgeries are not as invasive as others, they still require a short hospital stay so that the doctors and nurses can keep an eye on signs of serious damage to the spinal cord or any adverse reactions that you might have to medications and the like. Making sure that you are going to be comfortable while you are in the hospital will help you feel a little more at home and at ease. There is no need to bring everything but the kitchen sink to the hospital, but there are a few things that you are really going to need over your stay. Listed below are just some of the things that you might need while you are at the hospital. Comfortable slippers/shoes These are essential as you will be expected to walk around the hospital so that they can judge your range of movement. Having comfortable shoes or slippers (i.e. Crocs) will be much easier to walk around in than having to try to put on a pair of sneakers or something similar. Water bottle You will be encouraged to drink a lot of fluids while you are staying in the hospital. If you don’t feel like sitting up each and every time you want to take a sip of water, a water bottle with a squirt lid on it will help you out a lot. Pajamas Being comfortable while recuperating in the early stages as well as your transition to home is very important. Bringing pajamas with you to the hospital is a great idea because you can wear them out of the hospital as well. Make sure that they button down the front so that they are easy to get in and out of when you need to. Lip balm and moisturizers Hospitals are usually very dry environments. To keep yourself from getting painfully chapped and dry lips/skin, pack a little bottle of skin/hand cream and some lip balm. Toiletries Even if you are not allowed to shower on your own, you will probably still want to brush your teeth. It never hurts to have a little bag of toiletries with you for your hospital stay to do just that. Comfy robe Hospital gowns are known for the fact that they don’t do much in the way of protecting/hiding your back side. Having a warm and comfy robe for your walks around the halls can be very beneficial. Entertainment Maybe it is a couple of books, your iPad, or something else that you enjoy. You are going to be spending a lot of time relaxing in bed immediately after surgery, so it is very important that you have something to keep yourself busy with while you have to stay flat. Back surgery can be a very serious thing, as can the hospital stay that comes with it. Do you best to keep yourself as comfortable and happy as possible, making your stay just that much more bearable.
