You should not drive until you are confident that you can make emergency stops and decisions without causing yourself pain and discomfort. Until you are off of the pain medication and there is no risk of you having a reaction, you should not operate a vehicle. Reinjuring yourself When you are sitting for long periods of time after surgery, you risk reinjuring yourself by putting strain on your newly fixed back. This runs the risk of having things like a herniated disk happening. Strain on wounds Having to turn to look in your blind spots and sit for longer than you should after surgery may out unneeded strain on your healing wounds, causing them to tear open. If your stiches or staple tear out, this could cause you to become infected at the wound area, and this is not what you want. Risking becoming infected could cause some serious problems for you in the long run. This can cause scar tissue as well as make the healing process take much longer than it should. These complications are something that can be easily avoided if you wait an appropriate amount of time to start driving again. Driving after you have had your back recently operated on is not a good idea. There are far too many risks associated with it, and it far outweighs the benefits of having someone else driving for you. It is very important to make sure that you have other options for transportation after your surgery, as well as to your appointments until you are confident that you can drive comfortably for extended periods of time.
